If you have noticed your vision becoming misty or blurred again months or even years after successful cataract surgery, you aren’t alone. It is a common occurrence, but the good news is that it can be fixed in a matter of minutes.
At Clarity, we specialise in restoring your vision using YAG Laser Capsulotomy. This quick, non-invasive procedure is designed to clear the “cloudiness” that can sometimes return after surgery, getting your eyesight back to its best.
What is a YAG Laser?
The term YAG stands for Yttrium-Aluminium-Garnet. In the world of ophthalmology, it is a highly precise laser used to treat a condition known as Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO).
Why do I need it?
During cataract surgery, your natural cloudy lens is replaced with a clear artificial one. This new lens sits inside a thin, clear membrane called the “lens capsule”. Over time, in about 10% to 20% of patients, this membrane can become thickened or wrinkled.
Patients often describe this as feeling like their “cataract has come back.” However, cataracts cannot return; it is simply the membrane becoming opaque. This is where the YAG laser comes in.
The Benefits of YAG Laser Treatment
Choosing to have YAG laser treatment offers several immediate advantages for your eye health and lifestyle:
- Painless and Non-Invasive: There are no needles, no stitches, and no “going under.”
- Rapid Results: Most patients notice a significant improvement in their clarity of vision within 24 hours.
- Short Appointment Time: The actual laser treatment usually takes less than 10 minutes.
- Permanent Solution: Once the membrane is cleared with the laser, it does not grow back.
What to Expect During the Procedure
We understand that any procedure involving the eyes can feel daunting. At Clarity, we ensure the process is as relaxed as possible.
1. Before the Treatment
Your clinician will apply special dilating drops to your eye to enlarge your pupil. This gives the consultant a clear view of the membrane. You may also receive anaesthetic drops to ensure you don’t feel any discomfort.
2. During the Treatment
You will sit at a machine similar to the one used during a standard eye exam. You simply rest your chin and forehead against the supports. The consultant uses the YAG laser to create a tiny, precise opening in the centre of the cloudy capsule. This allows light to pass through clearly to the back of your eye again.
Note: You might see some flashes of light or hear a faint “click” sound during the process, but the procedure is entirely painless.
3. Aftercare
Immediately after, your vision might be slightly blurred from the dilating drops. You will need someone to drive you home. You might also notice a few “floaters” in your vision for a few days—this is perfectly normal as the treated membrane settles.
