Mr Samer Elsherbiny is a distinguished Consultant Ophthalmologist with a comprehensive career spanning over two decades in eye care, education, and research. Since beginning his consultant role in 2004, he has consistently taken on additional responsibilities both within and outside his NHS commitments. His journey in ophthalmology began after graduating with an MB ChB from Sheffield University in 1993. He later became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1999 and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 2010, further solidifying his expertise. From 2004, Mr Elsherbiny served as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre (BMEC), where he held various key positions including College Tutor, Honorary Senior Lecturer, Clinical Audit Lead, and Medical Retina Service Lead. His specialities encompass general adult ophthalmology, cataract surgery, and medical retina conditions, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retina, and retinal vascular occlusions.
In May 2017, Mr Elsherbiny transitioned to lead the Medical Retina Service at the Machen Eye Unit in the South Warwickshire Foundation Trust. Beyond his clinical duties, he is a designated Educational Supervisor for Buckingham University Medical School and the GIRFT Lead for the eye department. His commitment to medical education is further demonstrated by his Masters in Medical Education from the University of Birmingham in 2016. In January 2020, he took on the role of Associate Clinical Professor (OSCE lead) at Warwick Medical School, playing a pivotal part in implementing the new GMC UKMLA examinations during its pilot phase. Mr Elsherbiny’s extensive contributions also include being a member of the Royal College Fellowship Examinations committee, a surgical skills faculty member, and an examiner for the College. He is also an external advisor to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman and a reviewer for several ophthalmology journals. His dedication to advancing the field is evident through his active involvement as Principal Investigator for both NIHR and commercially sponsored studies.
