Mr Francesco D’Alterio MD, FEBOphth is an experienced Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in vitreoretinal surgery, cataract surgery and medical retina with more than 12 years of experience in Ophthalmology.
Francesco specialises in routine and complex vitreoretinal surgery, including surgery for macular hole, epiretinal membrane, retinal detachment, vitreous haemorrhages, complications of diabetic retinopathy and secondary intraocular lens implant. He provides state-of-the-art treatments for retinal conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion and diabetic retinopathy.
Francesco also specialises in routine high volume and complex cataract surgery with standard and premium intraocular lenses (including toric, extended depth of focus and multifocal intraocular lenses).
Mr D’Alterio currently serves as full-time Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon (locum) at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust where he is also the lead of the Medical Retina service. He is also involved in education and training of doctors learning cataract and vitreoretinal surgery.
Francesco gained extensive experience in vitreoretinal surgery having trained at the world-renowned St. Paul’s Eye Unit (Royal Liverpool University Hospital), Newcastle Eye Centre (Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) and Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust with internationally recognised fellowships in vitreoretinal surgery. He has also completed a Medical Retina fellowship at the Western Eye Hospital (Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust) in London.
Francesco also achieved the esteemed certification of Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO) and holds a 2nd level Master Degree in Vitreoretinal surgery from Humanitas University of Milan.
His passion for surgical and clinical research is reflected in his numerous peer-reviewed publications, involvement in clinical trials, and his role as reviewer for several international scientific journals.
Francesco regularly presents at major national and international Ophthalmology conferences, including BEAVRS (UK), EURETINA, ARVO (USA), and GIVRE (Italy), sharing insights on cutting-edge techniques and research findings. He was awarded with a grant from Knights Templar Eye Foundation at 2016 ARVO meeting (USA).
