Mr Piergiacomo Grassi is a highly accomplished Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Service Lead at the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, bringing over 14 years of specialist experience to Clarity. After graduating with honours from the University “Federico II” of Naples, he underwent extensive elite training in the United Kingdom, including prestigious Glaucoma and Vitreoretinal fellowships at the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital, St Thomas’ Hospital, and the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. His clinical practice is defined by a mastery of micro-incisional vitreoretinal techniques (23G, 25G, and 27G pars plana vitrectomy) and the surgical management of high-complexity cases, ranging from advanced diabetic retinopathy and paediatric vitreoretinal surgery to complex retinal detachments.
Beyond his retinal expertise, Mr Grassi is a specialist in refractive lens exchange and complex cataract surgery, utilising both standard and premium intraocular lenses, including toric, multifocal, and extended depth of focus (EDOF) options. He is also a pioneer in the treatment of glaucoma through Micro-Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) and the scleral fixation of secondary intraocular lenses. His technical proficiency is recognised internationally; he has performed live surgery for the prestigious Floretina Congress and continues to push the boundaries of ophthalmic surgery through the integration of the latest surgical innovations.
In addition to his clinical work, Mr Grassi holds the position of Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester and serves as the Lead for Undergraduate Medical Education at his trust. A prolific researcher, he has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals and regularly presents his findings at national and international conferences across Europe and the USA. As a dedicated educator, he acts as an e-portfolio assessor for UK trainees and supervises senior fellows and international visiting consultants, ensuring that the next generation of surgeons benefits from his extensive expertise in clinical precision and academic excellence.
