Dr Alvin Ochieng is a highly experienced Consultant Gastroenterologist based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH), where he is a key figure in specialist digestive health. His primary areas of expertise include Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), general luminal gastroenterology, and advanced endoscopy. Dr Ochieng is committed to driving clinical innovation and efficiency, holding the position of Clinical Lead for wireless capsule endoscopy and serving as co-Lead for faecal microbiota transplantation. In this pioneering role, he works closely with the Quadram Institute and microbiology specialists to manage challenging cases, particularly refractory Clostridioides difficile infections, highlighting his dedication to improving outcomes for patients with complex conditions. He was recently recognised by the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) in 2024 with a joint-third prize for his work in service development and was awarded a coveted place on the prestigious BSG Improvement Leadership Programme as part of Project 90 in 2025.
After completing his undergraduate and postgraduate medical degrees, and obtaining his Gastroenterology CCT at the Carol Davila Faculty of Medicine in Bucharest, Dr Ochieng gained extensive and varied advanced experience across some of the UK’s most respected specialist centres. His training pathway included roles at the renowned St. Mark’s Hospital (2015–2016), St. James’s University Hospital as an Endoscopy Clinical Fellow (2016–2017), St. Thomas’s Hospital as a Senior HPB Fellow (2017–2018), and University Hospital Southampton as an Advanced Endoscopy Fellow (2018–2019). This rigorous foundation prepared him exceptionally well for his Consultant post at NNUH, which he took up in 2020. This wealth of experience, coupled with his commitment to service improvement, demonstrates his dedication to delivering high-quality, patient-centred gastroenterological care.
