Mr Bhaskar Gupta is a highly experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in the treatment of vitreoretinal disorders and cataracts, based at University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust. Since 2017, he has dedicated himself to providing exceptional care for patients with conditions affecting the back of the eye, including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and retinal detachment. With a career spanning over two decades, Mr Gupta has performed more than 21,000 cataract surgeries and 2,000 vitrectomies, demonstrating his surgical expertise and commitment to improving patients’ vision.
Mr Gupta’s impressive qualifications include a medical degree from B.J. Medical College in India, where he was awarded a Gold Medal for his master’s in ophthalmology, and a Doctorate of Medicine (DM) from Cranfield University, UK, focusing on ethnic variations in diabetic retinopathy. He completed specialised ophthalmology training in the UK and further honed his skills with two years of sub-specialty training in vitreoretinal disorders. Beyond his clinical work, Mr Gupta is actively involved in charitable initiatives, teaching and performing cataract surgery in Cambodia and India. He is also a respected researcher, with over 60 peer-reviewed publications, and a principal investigator in numerous clinical trials, including the NIHR EVIAN trial and studies on new treatments for macular degeneration and retinal detachment. Mr Gupta’s dedication to patient care, combined with his extensive surgical and research experience, makes him a trusted expert in his field.
